#8 Amistad National Recreation Area

GOVERNORS LANDING CAMP HOST

15 Camp Sites with a covered picnic table and a BBQ grill. Generally, the sites are suitable for RVs less than 28 feet. However, there are some sites that can accommodate larger RV's. There is a loop adequate for larger RV's with Toads to maneuver within the camp area. Governors Landing is the only NPS campground at Amistad with potable water. The closest dump station is located about 3 miles, at Diablo East.

Responsible for performing daily morning and nightly rounds, host a weekly Cowboy Coffee Program. Single or Couples work a total of 28-32 hours per week. There is only one Host assigned to Governors Landing. Greet campers and assist them in camping or park related matters. Maintain a current log of campers in the Campground. Amistad Volunteers are subject to a basic background check including fingerprints at no cost to the Volunteer.

#7 Davy Crockett Birth Place State Historic Park

INTERPRETER/MUSEUM/VISITORS CENTER
Provide visitors historical/local information at the Museum, Visitors Center and Davy Crockett Replica Cabin.
The RV Volunteer position requires 2 days per week per person on Saturday and Sunday, and Holidays; opening at 9:30 a.m. and closing the Museum,Visitors Center and Cabin at 4:30 p.m.
A Resource Library is available, which includes books, archeology and genealogy reports.
Single or Couple work a total of 16 hours each per week on weekends.

Full Hookup Site with 30/50 amp, water, sewer, picnic table located in the campground. Swimming pool, hiking and biking trails. Family members are welcome to visit and are provided free use of facilities while visiting.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Located at the confluence of Limestone Creek and the Nolichucky River, The birthplace of David Crockett. This is a first State Park experience, and is proving to be another great location to volunteer. Park staff are excellent to work with and appreciate the contributions of volunteers. The work environment is very relaxed. There is a lot of autonomy in opening/closing/operating the museum, visitors center and cabin within minimal guidelines. Park staff require minimum operating hours of 10-4 with 1 hour lunch period on Saturday and Sundays, however we agreed to keep the facility open from 9:30 - 4:30. Volunteers have the independence to develop formal/informal historical interpretive programs to present to visitors.

This is a very unique experience, especially for those that grew up during the Disney Crockett Era. A great opportunity to share the history of this popular King of the Wild Frontier and contributor to American History with youngsters, as well as adults.

It was fun discussing with some Brits that visited; how Davy almost ended up in England. What would that have done to American History?

FMSS VOLUNTEER

The FMSS (Facility Management Software System) Volunteer Position involved asset data collection throughout maintained, populated and primitive areas of Big Bend National Park, to obtain measurements, record GPS locations, and take digital photographs of modern structures, historical structures, and designated ruins.
The job involved assessing and obtaining measurements of structures to determine square footage, construction materials of foundations, exterior walls, and roofing components; as well as interior spaces. In addition, an assessment was conducted and measurements taken of all windows, exterior doors, stairways, water fountains, and plumbing devices. The position also required determining types of electrical/mechanical components and recording, model numbers, serial numbers, and manufacturers of heating, air conditioning, water heaters, and other specified devices as determined by FMSS Staff.
Asset data collection also involved determining construction materials, and taking measurements, of all camping/ recreational vehicle pads at the Rio Grande Village, Chisos Basin, and Cottonwood Campgrounds, along with camping amenities located on each site, and within group camping areas. This included assessing and measuring ramada’s, food locker’s and determining amenities such as; electrical, water, and sewer connections. Additionally, asset data collection included traveling backcountry roads measuring primitive camp sites and amenities, determining materials used for construction of sites and amenities to include food lockers, and camping pads.
All asset data collection information is entered into the National Park Service, Facility Management Software System (FMSS) by facilities Staff.
Single or Couple work a total of 32 hours each per week and are scheduled to work togethe with the same 3 consecutive days off.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

An excellent 2 week orientation program, including a 2 day Rio Grande Canoe Trip; issuance of park stickers for vehicles, keys, and park familiarization tour. Facilities Staff ensured RV Site setup was adequate, including providing an adapter for electrical connection. Computer Security Training was provided and issuance of NPS email account and computer access. Initially, the volunteer RV Site had 20/30 amp service. Power was not adequate and breakers had to continuosly be reset. The Lead Electrician and Electrical Volunteer installed a new 50 amp electric pedestal the same day they became aware of the power issue. An abbreviated 2 day orientation included tour of Bend National Park was provided upon arrival.
This was another great volunteer experience with the NPS.
The FMSS Volunteer position was the first for Big Bend National Park. All FMSS work was completed ahead of anticipated schedule and one week prior to agreed upon commitment.

Charleston is an exceptionally Friendly and Clean City to visit. We enjoyed working with the wonderful NPS Staff at the Historic sites. We had a 2 month commitment, and stayed 3 months.

The work involves the use of a cash register for entry fees, and a separate cash register for Book Store sales. An historical Ft Moultrie video is shown every 30 minutes. Interact with visitors providing historical interpretive information for museum exhibits and Ft Moultrie displays. Volunteers can participate optionally as Ft Moultrie Interpretive Guides.

Park Rangers are excellent to work with, and appreciate the service provided by Volunteers. National Park Service Volunteer Hats and Khaki Shirts are provided. Volunteers can wear Khaki shorts, and/or trousers/pants.

This has been one of the most positive and memorable highlights of my life. Volunteers are allowed to be creative and flexible in presenting informal interpretations to park visitors during rotating assignments.

I recommend Volunteer Service at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore without hesitation.

There were no minimum hours required to be reported, or reports to submit. All facilities were closed and locked. Visitors could dry camp over night without cost. Volunteers are On-site to prevent vandalism.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE

This was an experience - the folks with the COE were excellent. They delivered firewood to our site. It turned out to be one of the coldest Missouri winters ever. We had our boat in a slip at the Marina, and made numerous trips on Table Rock Lake to the local Pizza Hut, which had a dock on the lake.....we quit going to the Pizza Hut by water when Table Rock Lake froze over.....The boat was frozen in the Marina. At the first thaw, we hauled the boat out and headed to Palacios, TX. We made numerous trips to Eureka, AR, which is a quaint artsy town, with some nice restaurants and window shopping. We would go back to the COE in Missouri, but just not in the Winter.
